PRESENTERS

Beth Barker has been in Church Ministry for over thirty years. She is the Director of the Cursillo for Women. For the past eight years Beth has been involved with Religious Education and Youth Ministry. She is certified as a Spiritual Director and a Director of the 19th Annotation Retreat of the Spiritual Exercises. Presently, Beth is the Associate Director of St. Joseph Renewal Center.


Jim Barker is the President of Roanoke Sand and Gravel and a board member of Hope House Ministry. He is the Director of St. Paul’s Cursillo Men’s Program in Brooklyn. Jim completed the three year training program in the Art of Spiritual Direction through St. Joseph Renewal Center and has been practicing for the past five years. He has been involved with the Men’s Movement for over a decade.


Josephine Daspro, CSJ, D.Min. Director of St. Joseph Renewal Center, Brentwood, NY has worked in education, in parish ministry, as a Director of Religious Education and as the Director of Spirituality and Adult Formation. She holds a Doctorate of Ministry degree in the area of Spirituality and Suffering, from Wesley Theological Seminary, Washington, DC. Sister Josephine has given spirituality retreats for men and women and has extensive experience as a Spiritual Director and Supervisor, and is the Director of a Three Year Training Program in the Art of Spiritual Direction. She has trained experienced spiritual directors to give the 19th Annotation Retreat of the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius as well as training experienced spiritual directors in becoming supervisors.


Michael Dunne is a graduate of the Pastoral Formation Institute, Rockville Centre, NY and completed the third year track in Liturgy. Michael coordinates the monthly “Men 2 Men” gathering at Montfort Spirituality Center in Bay Shore, NY for St. Joseph Renewal Center. He is the former Northeast coordinator of Man Matters Spirituality, an affiliated chapter of Illuman, previously known as MALEs the men’s work arm of the Center for Action and Contemplation founded by Fr. Richard Rohr, OFM in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Michael has been trained as a spiritual director and as a supervisor of spiritual directors. He is a director of the 19th Annotation Retreat of the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola. Michael serves as a cantor in St. Mark’s Church, Shoreham. He and his wife Valerie have a blended family of five grown children and eight grandchildren.


Valerie Dunne is a certified Spiritual Director. She is experienced in directing the 19th Annotation Retreat of the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola. Valerie is also trained as a Supervisor of Spiritual Directors and as a Director of Directed Retreats. She is a graduate of the Pastoral Formation Institute in the Diocese of Rockville Centre, NY with a third year track in Pastoral Care of the Sick. Valerie and her husband Michael are involved in ministry to married couples and are members of St. Mark’s Parish in Shoreham. They are the proud grandparents of eight active grandchildren ranging in ages from 6 months to 13 years.


Jean Lynch is a Spiritual Director and Supervisor of Spiritual Directors who has a MA in Theology from St. John’s University and an Advanced Certificate in Spirituality from Immaculate Conception Seminary, Huntington, NY. A facilitator of retreat and workshops designed to provide healing through prayer and reflection, she is certified in Inner Healing Prayer and Mandala Assessment through the National Institute of Inner Healing. A wife, mother, grandmother and teacher of religion for many years, she created and has been facilitating the God Gives Us Songs in Our Sleep Program for twenty years.


Lenny Sclafani a semi-retired Catholic Deacon of the Brooklyn Diocese. "One never retires fully from Spiritual Ministry" he says. He is a practicing Spiritual Director and Pastoral Counselor for the past 22 years. He received training at Fordham University's post graduate program in the School for Religious Studies. He has participated, conducted, developed and contributed to many retreat programs over the last 40 years. He has conducted the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius and has provided Supervision for Spiritual Directors. He is married, father of three, grandfather of six, and currently navigating the elderly waters of this life.


Father Bill Slater was ordained a priest in 1977. He has served in parishes on Long Island, most recently as Associate Pastor and as Pastor of Notre Dame Parish in New Hyde Park. Fr. Slater has taught New Testament Scripture at the Seminary of the Immaculate Conception in Huntington as well as in the parish. His experience, knowledge and teaching ability brings life to the study of the Sacred Word.


Joan Vessio is retired from a career with the Brooklyn Union Gas Company. Joan is certified as a Spiritual Director and as a Supervisor of Spiritual Directors. She directs the 19th Annotation Retreat of the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius. Joan is a co-coordinator of the Women 2 Women here at St. Joseph Renewal Center. She is a team member of the Women’s Spirituality Retreat.
